These terms
These terms govern your use of helloao.org. Products and platforms AO Lab operates elsewhere carry their own terms; where they do, those terms govern them rather than this page. By using this site, you agree to these terms. AO Lab is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organisation based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, United States.
What it costs
Nothing. There is no fee, no licence to purchase, and no account to create. AO Lab is a nonprofit funded by people who believe Scripture infrastructure should be given away, and the open-source licences below are written so that a change of heart on our part could not take from you what you have already received.
Licences
Our code is released under the MIT licence in its public repositories. The licence text in each repository governs that code, and prevails over anything on this page.
The Scripture texts we publish are in the public domain or are otherwise openly licensed by their publishers. Some carry attribution requirements set by the publisher, not by us; where a translation states such a requirement, please honour it.
Our name and marks — "AO Lab" and our logos — are not covered by those licences. You may say truthfully that your project is built on our code. Please do not use our names or logos in a way that suggests we produced, endorse, or are responsible for your project.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- attempt to disrupt, overload, or gain unauthorised access to our systems;
- use this site to distribute malware, or for any unlawful purpose; or
- present your project in a way that implies an AO Lab partnership that does not exist.
We reserve the right to block traffic that is attacking this site or degrading it for everyone else.
Availability
We publish this site on a best-effort basis, with no service-level agreement and no uptime guarantee, and we may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of it at any time. What we have already released as open source stays released: those licences are not revoked by anything that happens to this website.
Donations
Donations are processed by Better.Giving and its payment processors, under their terms. Gifts to AO Lab are tax-deductible in the United States to the extent allowed by law; we will provide the acknowledgement required for that. Gifts are generally non-refundable, though if a mistake has been made, write to us and we will do the right thing. Unless a gift is designated for a specific purpose we have agreed to in writing, AO Lab directs it to its charitable mission as its board sees fit.
Third-party services
This site embeds a donation form from Better.Giving, an email signup form from Benchmark Email, and a video player from YouTube that loads only if you click play. It links to services we do not control, including YouTube, Discord, GitHub, and the National Christian Foundation. We are not responsible for those services, and your use of them is governed by their own terms.
No warranty
This site is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, accuracy, or uninterrupted availability.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, AO Lab and its directors, officers, employees, and volunteers will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or exemplary damages, or for any loss of profits, data, or goodwill, arising out of or in connection with your use of this site. To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim relating to this site is limited to one hundred United States dollars (US$100).
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions or limitations, in which case the exclusions and limitations above apply to the fullest extent those laws permit, and nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
Indemnity
You agree to indemnify AO Lab against claims, losses, and reasonable costs arising from your use of this site in breach of these terms or in violation of applicable law or the rights of a third party.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Michigan, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. The state and federal courts located in Kent County, Michigan have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them, and you consent to that jurisdiction. If you are a consumer resident in the UK or EEA, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory laws of your country of residence.
Changes
We may update these terms; the date at the top of the page will change when we do, and continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms. Changes are not retroactive, and no change to this page alters the open-source licence already granted for code or texts you have received.
